The constituency’s legislative history began in 1999 with the election of Eric Iheanacho “Acho” Nwakanma, who emerged as the pioneer representative following the restoration of democratic governance in Nigeria. Nwakanma was re-elected in 2003 but did not complete his second term, as he was appointed Deputy Governor of Abia State in March 2006, marking a significant elevation of the constituency’s political profile at the state level.
In 2007, Solomon Akpulonu won the Obingwa East seat, beginning what would become the most dominant legislative era in the constituency’s history. His initial term lasted until 2011, after which the seat changed hands briefly.
The 2011 general elections produced Princewill Chilaka as the constituency’s representative. Chilaka served a full four-year term from 2011 to 2015, representing the only interruption to Akpulonu’s legislative presence since 2007.
