United Abia Artistes and Patriots Forum (UAAP) has applauded the Abia state government led by Dr. Alex Otti over the infrastructural development in the state.
A press conference organized by the group in Umuahia gave Governor Alex Otti a pass mark and urged the Opposition to be constructive.
The statement reads:
After assessing the progress of Governor Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, over the last 14 months and observing the activities of opposition parties during this time, it has become necessary to share our insights and provide recommendations for the ongoing development of our cherished Abia State.
Having significantly contributed to the rise of the current administration, we recognize that this pivotal moment warrants an impartial evaluation. By examining the state’s advancements under Governor Otti’s leadership, assessing the administration’s effectiveness, and sharing constructive ideas, we can contribute to realizing the vision of a New Abia.
While we refrain from excessive flattery, it is clear that the administration has made notable progress in advancing Abia. The concept of a New Abia is increasingly becoming a reality.
The current leadership has shown that effective governance is not overly complicated; it is based on clear visualization, planning, execution, and oversight. These four essential elements are actively driving progress in Abia State.
One notable success of the administration has been in infrastructure development, generating curiosity about the funding mechanisms. When inquiries arise, the governor often quips, “That’s my trade secret.”
Aba has transformed into a hub of construction, revitalizing areas that have been neglected for over twenty years. Observing the work on Port Harcourt Road, managed by Julius Berger, as well as Ngwa Road, Omuma Road, and other sites, underscores the administration’s serious commitment to improving Abia.
Umuahia is gradually evolving into the state capital it was always intended to be. A trip along the newly inaugurated Agulyi Ironsi Boulevard Road reveals a revitalized city center. Traveling through Umuahia has become easier, thanks to the administration’s efforts to restore the capital’s former magnificence by improving internal roadways.
We should also highlight the extensive road construction stretching from Umuahia through Uzuakoli in the Bende LGA, to Akara in Isuikwuato, covering Igbere and Abiriba, and concluding in Ohafia. Additionally, Nunya Road and numerous other road projects are underway throughout the state.
This government is dedicated to the health of its citizens. Tertiary healthcare facilities, including the Specialist Hospital in Umuahia, Amachara General Hospital, and Abia State Teaching Hospital in Aba, have been revitalized, with plans to upgrade all general hospitals and primary health centers across the state.
Moreover, the administration is making notable improvements in education by renovating primary and secondary school facilities and updating curricula to meet contemporary standards.
Lastly, it is important to acknowledge the enhancement of welfare for Abia State civil servants. Once overlooked by past governments, they now receive their salaries promptly.
Promotional exams are currently underway, and the government is fulfilling its promise of a N45,000 wage award. Efforts are being made to address backlogs of unpaid salaries, and there is optimism for a review of the minimum wage, with a committee already in place to address this matter.
While detailing the administration’s achievements in various sectors over the last 14 months would be extensive, it’s important to note the recent allocation of N1 billion to small business owners, aimed at revitalizing their enterprises and boosting the state’s economy.
One significant but often overlooked improvement has been the enhanced image of Abia State. After suffering from negative media portrayal for over two decades, this narrative has shifted dramatically. Since the current administration took charge, Abia has gained positive attention and attracted investors eager to participate in the New Abia.
Although we recognize the impressive strides made by Governor Otti’s administration so far, we also understand that there is still much to achieve. Greater focus and support are needed in sectors such as agriculture, youth empowerment, ICT, and entertainment.
We have observed that while the opposition is trying to fulfill its democratic role approach seems misguided. Destructive criticism is outdated; constructive opposition is the way forward.
The current “pull him down” attitude of the opposition needs to change. They must understand that Abia State belongs to everyone, and its progress or setbacks are a shared responsibility, not just the burden of the current administration. We all need to contribute positively to drive the state forward.
As an organization, we encourage the opposition to provide constructive solutions alongside their critiques. Instead of merely criticizing, they should present alternative policies and ideas where they feel the administration is lacking. This approach, termed “Alternative Proposition,” enables the public to evaluate options for future elections and offers insights that may help the current administration correct its course.
If the opposition truly aims for the progress of the state, then an “Alternative Proposition” is the way to move forward.
In conclusion, Governor Otti’s accomplishments in the past 14 months are commendable, and it is essential that we collectively support his administration in striving for even greater success in Abia.
