The release of Nnamdi Kanu will alleviate insecurity in the Southeast.
Hon. Alex Ikwecheghi, the representative for Aba North and Aba South in the House of Representatives, stated that the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), could help alleviate the troubling insecurity in the South East region.

The lawmaker expressed this viewpoint during a press conference in Umuahia on Wednesday, held in conjunction with a fundraising event for the Abia Security Trust Fund. He called on President Ahmed Tinubu to consider the numerous requests for Kanu’s release.
Ikwecheghi emphasized that, contrary to some beliefs, Kanu is not a criminal, but rather a voice for the marginalized people of the South East. He mentioned that the South East caucus in the National Assembly had previously urged the President to free Kanu, suggesting that such an action would foster goodwill among the Igbo people and potentially lead to more votes for him in the 2027 elections.
He stated, “The South East National Assembly Caucus, led by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe in the Senate and Hon. Idu Igariwe in the House of Representatives, has convened and issued a statement to the President, asserting that Nnamdi Kanu could play a significant role in promoting peace, not only in the South East but across the nation. We have clarified that Kanu is merely voicing the concerns of his community and has not committed any crime.”
Ikwecheghi continued, “Kanu articulates the sentiments of the people of Igbo land, who feel marginalized. His release will greatly mitigate the current insecurity issues, and we have repeatedly communicated this. We have met with the NSA, Alhaji Nihu Rebadu, and engaged with the Security and Intelligence Committee. Even our Northern colleagues have advocated for Kanu’s release.”
He noted, however, that diplomatic efforts might yield better results in the campaign for Kanu’s freedom.
