Update On The Billboard Collapse Incident In Aba: ABSSAA Reassures Public of Ongoing Action and Commitment to Safety.

The Abia State Structures for Signage and Advertisement Agency (ABSSAA) deeply regret the tragic incident involving the collapse of a high-rise billboard structure in the city, which sadly claimed one life and left several others injured. Our thoughts and prayers remain with the bereaved family and all those affected by this unfortunate event.

As the Government agency responsible for regulating and overseeing outdoor advertising in Abia State, we wish to assure the public that we have not treated this incident with levity. From the moment it occurred, our team was on the ground alongside emergency responders to coordinate evacuation, medical support, and immediate safety measures.

We understand the concern over what may seem like silence on the part of the government, but that’s not the actual reality on ground, as the government has been working tirelessly behind the scenes, engaging with the owners of the collapsed structure, who have been cooperating fully with the agency and other relevant authorities. So far, they have:
1. Offset the full cost of the burial of the deceased;
2. Entered into advanced discussions with the Government regarding compensation for the injured and other affected parties.

Beyond this specific case, ABSSAA is reviewing existing billboard structures across the state to ensure strict compliance with safety standards. We are intensifying inspections, enforcing structural audits, and working to remove any unapproved or potentially hazardous installations.

Our priority is and will always be, the safety of lives and property in Abia State.
In due course, we will provide the public with a detailed report on the outcome of our engagements and the steps being taken to ensure justice and reform. We appreciate the patience and support of our citizens and reaffirm our commitment to responsible governance and public welfare.

Signed
Hon Mrs Victoria Dibunma Onwubiko
