NIGERIAN UNION OF TEACHERS (NUT) OBINGWA LGA CONGRATULATES NEW EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN AND PRESENTS TROPHY
The Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) in Obingwa Local Government Area paid a courtesy visit to the Executive Chairman of the Obingwa LGA,Hon Maxwell Chinweikpe Nwadike to congratulate him on his election victory and offer their support in the development of education in the area.
The NUT delegation, led by Comrade Joseph Victor Ahukanna (Chairman) took the opportunity to present a trophy they won during this year’s Teacher’s Day celebrations at the state level on 5th October,2024. The union secured first place for their outstanding contribution to education and the exceptional performance of the teachers in the LGA, a recognition that has brought pride to Obingwa.
During the visit, the union raised several critical issues affecting the education sector in the LGA, including:
1. Shortage of Staff: There is a pressing need for more qualified teaching staff in various schools within the LGA. Many schools are currently understaffed, leading to increased workloads for the existing teachers and, in some cases, compromised quality of education for students.
2. Non-Implementation of Promotions: The NUT highlighted the issue of unimplemented GEN.35 2019,2020 and 2021 promotions for deserving teachers. Many teachers who have been due for promotion for several years have not received their deserved advancement, which has caused dissatisfaction among the teaching staff.
3. Encroachment on School Lands: The union expressed concern over the encroachment on school lands, particularly in some areas where land allocated for educational purposes is being taken over for other uses. This has led to a reduction in the space available for schools to expand and provide adequate facilities for students. These have also caused threats to headmasters or headmistresses of the affected schools.
4. Poor infrastructure of their various schools in the local government especially those at the rural areas.
5. Appointment of substantial Education Secretary for the local government Education Authority. As there are limitations for those on acting capacity.
The NUT appealed to the Executive Chairman for intervention in addressing these issues to ensure the growth and sustainability of quality education in Obingwa LGA. The union also requested prompt action on the shortage of staff and the implementation of overdue promotions, as well as stricter measures to protect the educational lands from encroachment.
In response, the Executive Chairman Hon. Maxwell Chinweikpe Nwadike assured the union of his commitment to addressing the challenges faced by the education sector in the LGA. The Chairman pledged to work with relevant stakeholders to ensure that the education system receives the necessary attention and support it deserves.
The NUT representatives expressed their gratitude for the Chairman’s attention and promised to continue working collaboratively to improve the educational standards in Obingwa LGA.
