Lagos-Bound Passenger Dies Aboard Kenya Airways Flight
A passenger travelling on a Kenya Airways flight from Nairobi to Lagos died after becoming unresponsive shortly before the aircraft landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport on Tuesday night.
According to the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, the passenger had reportedly been denied entry into Madagascar and was being returned by Kenya Airways. During the flight, he allegedly became restless and aggressive, attempted to gain access to the cockpit and later tried to open the aircraft’s rear door. His hands were subsequently restrained behind his back to prevent further disruption.
Kenya Airways said the passenger was found unresponsive at about 9:20 p.m., roughly 20 minutes before landing. Crew members administered first aid and followed emergency procedures. The aircraft landed in Lagos at 9:41 p.m., where medical personnel examined the passenger and confirmed his death.
The Nigeria Police Airport Command has commenced investigations and taken statements from the flight attendants and captain. Police said the passenger experienced breathing difficulties before landing, while his body has been deposited at a morgue in Ikeja for further investigation. An autopsy may also be requested by his family to establish the cause of death.
Kenya Airways expressed condolences to the deceased’s family and said it was cooperating with the family, aviation regulators and relevant authorities as investigations continue.
